Visit the Myrtles Plantation Today St Francisville, LA

If the ghostly incident occurred, then it must have been caused by something else. Before we get to the problem of Chloe's existence, we should also examine the "murders" of Sarah Mathilda and her two daughters. In this case, the legend has twisted the truth so far that it is unrecognizable. She died tragically from yellow fever (according to historical record) in 1823.

The Williams family had a recurring story about her, even though it may not have been one that was initially intended to be shared beyond the family. The house was featured in a November 1980 issue of LIFE magazine, but Richard Winer’s book Houses of Horror contains the earliest written reference to the house I have been able to locate. They both brought up Sarah Mathilda and her daughters’ poisoning deaths. Nonetheless, someone told Marjorie Munson the ghostly tale of the Williams family, and she quickly wrote a song about the Myrtles Plantation ghost, a woman wearing a green beret.

Take the First Step toward Making Your Dream Home a Reality

History appears to support the claim that Woodruff was incredibly loyal to his wife and heartbroken by her passing that he never remarried. The celebration was held in the children’s dining room, which Woodruff locked off and forbade being used again for the rest of his life. The children’s poisoning room has never been used for dining purposes again.

Legends of Myrtles Plantation

She occasionally appears accompanied by the cries of small children, and other times, the sight of her face staring at someone sleeping from the side of the bed jolts them out of their slumber. History has shown that many of the stories that have been told about the place, mostly to explain the hauntings, never actually occurred. The truth seems to be an elusive thing at this grand old plantation house but there seems to be no question for those who have stayed or visited here that it is a spirited place. At the Myrtles Plantation, the ghosts of the past – whoever they might be -- are never very far away from the living. Winter was indeed murdered on the front porch by an unknown assailant but after being shot, he immediately fell down and died.

He was at work one day when a woman wearing an antique-style white dress entered the gate without saying anything to him. She approached the home and disappeared through it without ever opening the front door. The unfortunate occurrences that occur here frequently affect the house’s staff the most. They frequently witness things firsthand that would make lesser people flee the area in terror.

For starters, guests at Myrtles Plantation reported hearing strange noises. Others saw ghostly apparitions, often of a young girl wearing a turban. Corey Balazowich/FlickrThe supposedly haunted mirror inside the Myrtles Plantation house.

For whatever reason, Chloe put a small amount of poison into a birthday cake that was made in honor of the Woodruff's oldest daughter. Mixed in with the flour and sugar was a handful of crushed oleander flowers. The two children, and Sarah Mathilda, each had slices of the poisoned cake but Woodruff didn't eat any of it. Chloe patiently attended to their needs, never realizing (if it was an accident) that she had given them too much poison. Woodruff had a reputation in the region for integrity with men and with the law, but was also known for being promiscuous.

It was a great disappointment to learn that the Woodruffs had never owned a slave, or had any record of a slave, named Chloe, or Cleo, as she appears in some versions of the story. The records list all of the other slaves owned by the Woodruff family but Chloe simply did not exist. Eventually, Woodruff tired of Chloe and chose another girl to force himself on.

Do The Myrtles Plantation Really Have a Ghost?

Stirling not only remodeled the house but also renamed the plantation after the crepe myrtle trees that grew on the property. Worrying that Woodruff’s wife would find out and punish her, Chloe began eavesdropping on the family’s conversations all around the Myrtles Plantation house. One day, Woodruff caught her listening and ordered her ear cut off as a punishment.

On July 21, 1823, Sarah Mathilda died after contracting yellow fever. The disease was spread through a number of epidemics that swept through Louisiana in those days. Hardly a family in the region went untouched by tragedy and despair. Although heartbroken, Woodrooff continued to manage the plantation and to care for his children with help from Elizabeth.

At the age of 19, he left Connecticut and headed for the Mississippi River in search of his fortune because he had no ambition to become a farmer like his father. Although most demonstrations were peaceful, Washington called up the militia and sent them to quell the uprising. On the suggestion of some of the other key players in the situation, Bradford left the area once the protests were controlled. The Whiskey Rebellion, which took place in western Pennsylvania, started with several complaints about the high costs and taxes imposed on residents living along the frontier. When a mob invaded and set fire to the residence of a local tax collector, the complaints eventually turned violent.

Webber was to stand trial for Winter's murder but no outcome of the case was ever recorded. As far as is known, Winter's killer remains unidentified and unpunished. That would be the questionable history that has been presented to “explain” why the house is so haunted in the first place.

As time went on and more authors and television crews came calling at the Myrtles, the story changed again and this time, took on even more murders. In addition to the deaths of Sarah Mathilda, her daughters, and Chloe, it was alleged that as many as six other people had been killed in the house. One of them, Lewis Stirling, the oldest son of Ruffin Grey Stirling, was alleged to have been stabbed to death in the house over a gambling debt. However, burial records in St. Francisville state that he died in October 1854 from yellow fever. According to the growing legend, three Union soldiers were killed in the house after they broke in and attempted to loot the place. They were allegedly shot to death in the gentlemen's parlor, leaving bloodstains on the floor that refused to be wiped away.

The Winters first lived at Gantmore plantation, near Clinton, Louisiana, and then bought a plantation on the west side of the Mississippi known as Arbroath. Woodrooff's life would never be the same but he managed to purchase the farm outright from his mother-in-law. She was quite elderly by this time and was happy to see the place in good hands. She continued to live at Laurel Grove with her son-in-law and granddaughter, Octavia, until her death in 1830.

It was at this point, they say, that the ghost stories of the house began. They started innocently enough but soon, what may have been real-life ghostly occurrences took on a "life" of their own. The front porch of the Myrtles, where William Drew Winter was shot and killed. His murder was never solved, however, he did not -- as the legends claim -- stumble up the main staircase and die on the seventeenth step.

There are some who say that he squandered what was left of his fortune and lost the plantation in a game of chance but most likely, the place was just too deep in debt for him to hold on to. He sold the Myrtles to Oran D. Brooks, ending his family's ownership. By December 1867, he was completely bankrupt and the Myrtles was sold by the U.S.

Myrtles Plantation The UNTOLD Story Behind the Haunting

The wealth the family had accumulated was ultimately in the form of worthless Confederate cash after many of the family’s personal possessions were taken and burned by Federal soldiers. Woodruff was selected by Louisiana’s governor Isaac Johnson to the newly created position of Auditor of Public Works in 1840, and he held the position for one term. He eventually retired at the age of 60 and relocated to Oaklawn to live with Octavia and her husband. During this time, Octavia was enrolled in a finishing school in New Haven, Connecticut, but in 1836 she returned home to live with her father. She relocated to Colonel Lorenzo Augustus Besancon’s plantation, Oaklawn, five miles north of New Orleans, after they wed two years later.

Descendants of Coincoin would eventually control more than 11,000 acres and hundreds of their own slaves. According to many who have investigated the mirror, the handprints (or similar images) may be in the wood behind the mirror, not the glass. This allows light to flow through the glass like a camera flash and pick up the stains on the wood. According to the narrative, after being shot and later gravely wounded, Winter stumbled back inside the home via the ladies and gentlemen’s parlors and up the staircase leading from the main corridor.

The Secret History of a Louisiana Plantation Home

He brought them to live at Bayou Sarah and they settled into a comfortable life there. Bradford occasionally took in students who wanted to study the law. One of them, Clark Woodrooff, not only earned a law degree but also married his teacher's daughter, Sarah Mathilda. Originally called “Laurel Grove,” Myrtles Plantation was an antebellum plantation built in 1796 by General David Bradford, who resided there until he was needed for the Whiskey Rebellion in 1799. Over time, the plantation was sold and passed from family to family.

The two ancillary buildings are connected to the main house by a 5,000 square feet (460 m2) old brick courtyard. Scattered elsewhere on the grounds are modern wooden cottages available to guests. These structures, and the development of his property, served as a prelude to Metoyer's rise. He would design the Big House, a grand plantation home done in French Colonial Style, in 1830, seeing construction start before he died in 1832.

Historic Preservation

The enchanted site, where Malibu Creek meets the Pacific Ocean, was once home to the Chumash Indians, who thrived there until the late 18th century. Later, the Rindge family owned 17,000 acres and 20 miles of coastline. The Rindge family’s daughter, Rhoda, and her husband, Merritt Huntley Adamson, used the site to construct a beach house, now the historic Adamson House museum.

It has never been the intention of this article to claim that the Myrtles Plantation is not haunted. In fact, there is no doubt that the house qualifies as one of the most haunted locations in the nation, given the sheer volume of accounts that have been documented and gathered here. Then, on the precise 17th step, he ascended just high enough to pass away in his lover’s arms. Since then, it has been asserted that ghostly footsteps have been heard entering the house, making their way to the stairs, and then ascending to step 17, where they naturally come to an end. Another homicide is said to have taken place in 1927 when a housekeeper was murdered during a heist. Again, this crime has no record, even though anything so recent would have been extensively reported.

Legend states that three Union troops were slain there after breaking in and trying to rob the home. In the gentlemen’s parlor, they allegedly were shot to death, leaving bloodstains that would not come up with a mop. Following her passing, Chloe’s spirit has been reportedly seen at the Myrtles Plantation and was even unintentionally captured on camera by a previous owner. Even now, the estate still offers picture postcards with the murky depiction of a woman believed to be Chloe standing between two structures.

Welcome to Suriano Homes

Our accommodations range from six historical rooms and suites inside the main home, modern and traditional hotel-like garden rooms, cozy cabins along our walking path, or a gorgeous 7,000 square foot private home. "We don't have a lot of information about Metoyer," says Molly Dickerson, the site director at Melrose Plantation. "He had some other landholdings here, but there isn't a lot of documentation about his life or who he was as a person." The reality at this magnificent old plantation mansion seems elusive, yet all who have stayed or visited here agree it is a vibrant place. In the Myrtles Plantation, whether or not we recognize them, the ghosts of the past are never far from the present. Others claim to have witnessed the ghost, and she may have even been captured on camera in the past.

Knowing nothing about ghosts, Myers was terrified and pulled the covers over her head and started screaming. Then she slowly peeked out and reached out a hand to touch the woman, who had never moved, and to her amazement, the apparition vanished. Leaving his family in safety, he traveled down the Ohio River to the Mississippi. He eventually settled at Bayou Sara, near what is now St. Francisville, Louisiana. He had originally traveled here in 1792 to try and obtain a land grant from Spain.

His bloody trip through the house never took place --- information that was easily found in historical records. Another murder allegedly occurred in 1927, when a caretaker at the house was supposedly killed during a robbery. Once again, no record exists of this crime and an incident as recent as this would have been widely reported. The only event even close to this, which may have spawned the story, occurred when the brother of Fannie Williams, Eddie Haralson, was living in a small house on the property. He was killed during a robbery, but this did not occur in the main house, as the story states. Soon, the story of the Myrtles was appearing in magazines and books and receiving a warm reception from ghost enthusiasts, who had no idea that what they were hearing was a badly skewed version of the truth.

Is a Disney Cruise Worth It for Your Disney Vacation

is a disney cruise worth it

You are paying for the amazing service and Disney magical touches, but if the price is too high you may want to look at other cruise lines. Disney has their own private island, Castaway Cay that allows guests to enjoy during a Caribbean cruise. This has all the amenities you would expect including lunch, activities, and soft serve ice cream. You could easily pay for your cruise and not spend any extra money to experience the best of the cruise. If you would like to splurge you can add on special activities and dinners to your trip.

The entertainment will make your jaw drop.

These are indeed splurge experiences but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth the cost for many cruisers. There are beach chairs, entertainment, kids and teen clubs, hiking trails, beach activities, yoga, a waterslide and a tram to get you around. There are kids clubs suited to different age groups, from the 3-12 age group to the 11 to 14 tweens and a hangout zone for the teens too. How you spend your time really depends on what you enjoy doing and who you’re cruising with. From world-class dining experiences to Broadway quality theatre productions, brand new Disney movie theatre release films and fireworks at sea.

Aboard the ship

Disney Cruises are high end due to their quality but they are not out of reach for families. Aside from cruise to cruise comparisons, I feel that Disney Cruise is a worth it based on the experience itself. My son absolutely loved his first Disney Cruise experience and still asks me again and again when the next one is. We spent so much quality time together while also still having space to do our own thing. Our cruise included a stop at Castaway Cay which is Disney's private island in the Bahamas.

Character Meet-And-Greets Are Included With Disney Cruises Prices

Let’s put it another way; if you go hungry on a cruise ship, there’s no one to blame but yourself. You can either belly up to the buffet or enjoy table-service dining rooms (still with unlimited portions). I’m not sure that I have ever ordered just one dessert at dinner on a cruise. It’s easy to get sticker shock when you see a several-thousand-dollar price tag for your first Disney Cruise vacation. But it’s helpful to remember what goes into determining that price.

Kids can interact and have fun with other kids their own ages and adults can take a moment to enjoy the adult exclusive areas of the ship. I’ve been on cruises before where the food was unlimited but nearly inedible. Simply put, there is food everywhere, all the time, and nearly all of it is incredible. Most food on the ship is included with your fare, though there is one specialty dinner restaurant that costs money. Leah has been traveling with her family of 5 since 2012 and sharing her expertise on planning family vacations and visiting theme parks since 2016. Leah has been featured in Visit Rochester, Undercover Tourist, and Home Publications.

Truly the only bad thing about these awesome kids-only spaces is getting yours to leave when it’s time for dinner or bedtime. My 5-year-old woke up every day begging to go straight to the club and threw a fit every time we picked him up. Production shows are anything but the stale song-and-dance revues you might expect from other cruise lines. The special effects, costumes and choreography are simply spectacular -- Broadway could learn a thing or two -- and there's enough adult humor sprinkled in to keep more mature cruisers interested.

Download the app to find out everything that’s going on aboard the cruise ship. It’s similar to the My Disney Experience app for Walt Disney World and free to use. It provides all the information you need for activities, dining, and more.

Ticketed and Unique Character Experiences

is a disney cruise worth it

Now, we have also sailed on Carnival cruises and Royal Caribbean cruises. But for families, in my opinion, Disney cruises are the best for all that they offer. You can certainly experience the port and possibly an excursion or activity, in some ports you don’t see much beyond the port.

Frequent character wardrobe changes from port to port mean you can grab lots of different photos with Mickey, Minnie and the gang that are unique to your itinerary. Disney cruises aren’t just for kids; many adults find them enjoyable as well. With adult-only zones, including pools, bars, and fine-dining options, there’s plenty for adults to do. The theatrical shows and entertainment are top-notch, making the experience worthwhile even for those traveling without children.

There are tasting menu options (with or without wine) as well as singular entrees like squab, lobster, and grilled beef. Yes, Disney Cruise Lines have a premium price and while you can get deals and lower prices when cruising during the off-peak season, the price difference is still notable. This is also usually the biggest reason people choose not to book Disney cruises. One of the notable differences between Disney Cruise Line Vs other cruise lines is the number of ships in the fleet. Disney has a much smaller fleet which means fewer cruising destinations.

” Disney brings its iconic characters and stories onboard, transforming your cruise into a fantastical journey. One great thing about meals on Disney cruises is the rotational dining rooms where you’re assigned to a different dining room every day. All the Disney Cruise ships include adult only areas for guests 18 and older. Most ships all include a spa, a private adult area pool and bar, coffee bar, wine tastings or cocktail classes, and adult only dining experiences. Many of these come at an additional cost but can be worth it if you are looking to relax on your cruise and indulge.

Whether it is your first time on a Disney cruise or any cruise, there are many factors to consider when deciding whether this type of vacation is right for your family. But years ago, I was able to get an inside stateroom for two people for a three night cruise for well under $1,000. Make sure to visit the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique onboard the ship. This boutique is the enchanted salon where you can make an appointment to transform your child into a sea captain, knight, or princess. Many families go on Disney Cruises to celebrate a special occasion. If you have any requests like a special dining location, celebration, or putting in an order for a birthday cake, be sure to do so before you leave.

Disney owns Marvel, Lucasfilm, Touchstone and Pixar (as well as TV brands ABC and ESPN), so you can catch first-run films onboard, too. Both Palo and Remy have a restricted age limit to guests 18+. If you had a teen onboard, they would be unable to join for a dinner at Palo or Remy. Disney serves up great complimentary restaurants, but if you are looking for tons of dining options like on other cruise lines, then Disney Cruise Line may not measure up. In short, the appeal for families to combine their love of Disney and a cruise vacation is a compelling combo, especially those traveling with children. There's a television channel that plays non-stop Disney films in all Disney Cruise Line staterooms, dance parties on the pool deck, and some innovative water slides onboard each Disney ship.

The Senses Spa and Salon offers a wide variety of treatments, from couples massages to haircuts and manicures. I didn’t indulge, but my parents did, and they had a great time. There’s also the option to purchase access to the Rainforest Room, which includes heated stone chairs, a sauna and a steam room.

The characters are in many places for photo opportunities and autographs. ” And, we have done those too – both the three-day and four-day short Disney cruises. More recently, we did a 5 night Caribbean Disney Cruise with one stop in Nassau, Bahamas, two stops at Disney’s private island Castaway Cay, and one day at sea. I loved our day on Castaway Cay and this was one of the highlights of our cruise. We decided to split the day up between paddleboarding and relaxing on the beach. This was easily one of the prettiest places I've ever paddleboarded.

Charting New Waters: Norwegian Cruise Line Unveils Ambitious Plans For Eight Ships

cruise brands

The cruise line is a passenger shipping company operating privately-owned, parent-owned or chartered vessels. Cruise brands differ from ferry companies, which operate Ro-Ro ships and offer combined passenger and cargo shipping services on a limited number of routes and in just a few regions/destinations. Luxury cruise lines don’t just offer a more upscale experience; they set themselves apart with a distinct offering that you won’t be able to find in a mainstream cruise.

It List 2024

Here is our list of mainstream cruise lines, serving as an overview of the most popular cruise lines in the market. Oceania has carved out a niche with relatively small, upscale ships that offer a significant upgrade from mass-market vessels but aren't quite as fancy (or pricey) as luxury offerings. A giant of cruising in Europe, Switzerland-based MSC Cruises is making a big play for North Americans with newer, bigger ships sailing year-round from Florida to the Caribbean and Bahamas. Others operate vessels that are as luxurious as any upscale resort found on land. A few small luxury players such as Regent Seven Seas Cruises have ships with lavish suites that'll cost you as much as $11,000 a day.

Silversea Cruises

The Carnival parent company took over a majority stake in Cunard in 1998, but the brand's history began in 1840, when a Canadian war veteran established a fleet of steam-powered ferries and, later, ocean liners. The company will resume service in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, with three ships. When you step aboard any of the small and luxurious ships in the Oceania Cruises’ fleet, you will be immersed in a refined and unforgettable voyage. Oceania Cruises is renowned for its gourmet culinary program and richly diverse itineraries. Entertainment that includes live music and activities that include educational programs & enrichment programs attract a loyal and arguably more refined clientele. Some of these programs include cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, and various classes.

Seabourn

Until then, check out this amazing review of what to expect on a Disney cruise. The atmosphere is decidedly more upscale than other lines such as Carnival but not stuffy. It’s still casual with plenty of fun to be had albeit slightly more reserved.

Meet the world's biggest, boldest ships

Foresee Cruises fleet currently has 1 ship (MS Dream Charming/ex Sea Princess) and started China-based operations in May 2021. The UK-based company currently charters the tall-sailing ship Golden Horizon (Flying Clipper). LUXURY brands are Viking OCEAN, Resorts World, Cunard, Oceania, Hapag-Lloyd, Ponant, Saga UK. Services are premium (including 24-hour highly personalized concierge), prices are affordable, and the boats are new (refurbished more often), but the product is not all-inclusive. Its six vessels carry just 148 to 342 passengers — fewer than fit on a single big-ship lifeboat — and are wonderfully intimate.

The innovative onboard activities are so unique that other cruise lines have tried to one-up Royal Caribbean with their own insane ideas of onboard activities (for example NCL’s go-karts on the Encore). Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff. Windstar Cruises' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey.

What kind of passengers are Virgin Voyages hoping for?

See here the complete list of the world's largest cruise companies (passenger shipping corporations), associations and organizations. As this is a very long survey, for your convenience next links jump down directly to largest cruise corporations (shipowners), list of ALL cruise lines, RIVER travel brands and NEW brands. Carnival refers to its fleet as the "fun ships," offering a lively onboard atmosphere that focuses on pool parties, game shows and original entertainment. It prides itself on friendly service and a plethora of casual yet delectable dining venues. The line is an excellent choice for families, and it offers both short and long voyages at a variety of price points that make cruising affordable for most travelers.

Cruise Ship Brands: Which is the right one for you?

That said, the biggest thing NOT included on Virgin is alcohol, and there’s not an option to buy a drink package. We’ll list each major mass-market brand cruise brand along with an overview of their target demographic and some pros & cons of each cruise line. Get on island time and unwind on some of the best beaches in the world, venture deep into the rainforests, and snorkel the most vibrant reefs on a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise getaway with the whole family. Crystal Cruises represents the ultimate in luxury cruising with exceptional service, spacious and contemporary staterooms, and the finest amenities. Dining on a Crystal Cruise offers inventive menus inspired by internationally acclaimed chefs. They offer longer stays in many ports to provide true insights into the local regions.

Headquarters in Limassol, Cyprus), a subsidiary of Louis plc (the leader of the East Mediterranean tourism industry), in 2014 was re-branded "Celestyal Cruises". For the ones that are no more, see CruiseMapper's list of DEFUNCT companies. Dubbed Evrima, the line's only operating ship is a 298-passenger vessel designed to appeal to Ritz-Carlton regulars with an elegant, residential look. A second, bigger ship called Ilma that's already open for bookings debuts later this year.

Exquisite onboard menus have been designed by acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.

The new brand Exploris starts operations in December 2023 with Silversea's ship Exploris One/fka Silver Explorer (sold in January 2021). An India-based brand, Jalesh Cruises had 1 ship - MS Karnika (Pacific Jewel) - purchased in 2018 from P&O Australia. Jalesh Cruises suspended operations in November 2020 and Karnika ship was sold for scrap.

Multistory waterslides, ropes courses and even go-kart race tracks are among the gee-whiz attractions atop Norwegian Cruise Line's giant, resort-like ships. Tradition long has been a touchstone for this storied line, which dates to 1873 and is known for carefully crafted, globe-circling itineraries on midsize ships. Cunard fans love the line's relatively formal vibe (including nightly dress codes) and other nods to ocean liner tradition, including evenings with ballroom dancing.

A cruise line is a company that operates cruise ships and markets cruises to the public.[1] Cruise lines are distinct from passenger lines which are primarily concerned with transportation of their passengers. In recent years, Princess has added more and more specialty dining options to their ships with prices in line with most other cruise lines that offer specialty dining. For foodies booking a cruise, it’s important to know that each ship may be different with dining options, so check carefully to make sure what you expect, in fact, exists on the ship you’re planning on booking. MSC is catching up to what other cruise lines are making a part of the modern cruise experience including a focus on wellness, specialty dining, suites, entertainment, and a plethora of nice bars with drink packages.

The itineraries list will include 7-days Maldives and Cochin, India, 3-4-days mini-cruises around Sri Lanka, and days roundtrip voyages from Sri Lanka to Singapore. During the Coronavirus crisis, the Greek ferry company Seajets acquired several cruise ships (from Carnival Corporation and RCG-Royal Caribbean) thus forming a potential fleet for cruising. Explora Journeys has a 6-ship fleet of smaller-sized expedition ships (MSC EXPLORA class) with volume GT-tons, max passenger capacity 1473 (922 lower berths), 13 decks, 461 staterooms.
